Their members: Ian Smith, Noel Yee, Greg Maldonado, Jordan Campbell, Krissy Humphreys, and Memory, are all involved in pushing the art form to new heights both in technique and organizationally. Greg Maldonado has written two very successful instructional DVD on contact juggling, he worked with Noel Yee to publish a contact staff instructional DVD, and along with Ian, Jordan and Krissy, published an advanced poi DVD. Noel, Greg, Jordan and Krissy are also partners in the Spinagogue an organization that Ian helped found that focuses on weekend fire dance instructional intensives and traveling workshops. LumenAscent is a duet between Ian and Katy Pomelov. At one time Katy worked at the Temple of Poi as the Director of Choeography. Ian and Katy blend high technical skill with a beautiful fluid dance style to create something unlike anything that has come before. Their first duet "Bound Opposites" created waves in the fire dance community. Here is what Roger Lai (otherwise known as Grandfather Poi) had to say about their performance in the 2007 Temple of Poi Expo:
"That said... The act that STOLE THE SHOW was LumenAscent. Ian Smith and Katy Pomelov have put together an AMAZING show that combines modern dance and fire. You can tell that Ian's got dance training, and I've often thought that he's pretty much the best spinner in the area, combining both dance and technical skill. But the exciting thing about some of the best that the Bay Area fire scene has to offer is the integration of fire into a polished act. We saw that in the Think 13 shows last year, we saw it in Khan's awesome solo piece, and we saw it in Copper Lantern's piece that they did the last two FAF's (and this new tango piece promises to continue that). The LumenAscent piece is apparently part of a longer work-in-progress which hopefully they'll be able to pull together for later this year. This excerpt, though, already shows tremendous polish. The music is mixed well and flows cohesively, the choreography is well planned and paced... and Ian and Katy nailed the performance. Even the technical aspects -- the logistics of where the tools need to be, whether the safety has their tools ready, and whether the flames burned big the whole night, etc. were thoroughly thought out. So keep your eyes peeled for LumenAscent. After the show and at the afterparty, everyone I spoke to, even though they differed in terms of what other aspects they liked, generally agreed that LumenAscent put on the best show that night."

Copper Lantern Fire Theater is known for their use of dance, theater and propane effects in their fire performances. Everyone in the company is a trained dancer some in ballet and modern others in aerial and contortion. The co-directors Shaina Johnson and KT Tesch do an excellent job adding interesting story line and stunning visuals to their shows. They have put together shows where fire has a theatrical purpose it is not just flare. They have been known to employ metal work in both costumes and set pieces. And whenever they can get away with it they bring some sort of propane effects like propane cannons in the shape of street lanterns or fire shooting fans. Copper Lantern is a regular act at the Crucible's Fire Arts Festival and various Burning Man and Black Rock City Arts Foundation fundraisers.
